SCI-TReCS Research Conference 2015

The second SCI-TReCS Scientific SUMMiT took place on November 5th, 2015, and was organised by the team of Prof. E. Trinka, University Clinic of Neurology.

The Summit proved once more an important and indispensable opportunity to foster interdisciplinary scientific collaboration and exchange among the SCI-TReCS team members. In his keynote address Dr. Rüdiger Rupp, Head of Experimental Paraplegiology, Spinal Cord Injury Center at the Heidelberg University Hospital, presented his vision of reading and processing a spinal cord injury patient's intent of movement, bypassing the lesioned spinal cord, and forwarding this information to the affected limbs.

Motor imagery-based brain computer interfaces enabling this vision are an emerging technology and a field of intensive research not only in Salzburg. Guided by the motivation to advance the understanding of neuroplastic and neuroregenerative processes, to discuss the potential of novel research approaches and therapeutic strategies, researchers of various disciplines, University institutes, and University clinics presented their findings, on-going research activities, and study plans.

The concluding highlight of the convention was the evening keynote address by Prof. Timothy O’Brien, Regenerative Medicine Institute and CURAM, National University of Ireland, Galway and Saolta University Healthcare Group, on the therapeutic potential and challenges with the use of Mesenchymal stromal cell and the funding support for trials under the EU Horizon 2020 program.

The SCI-TReCS Summit again highlighted the close interrelation of basic and clinical research and underlined the high level of commitment of the SCI-TReCS team members.
