Institute of Experimental Neuroregeneration

Welcome to the Research Institute of Experimental Neuroregeneration!

Our Institute has been established in August 2013 as part of the Spinal Cord Injury and Tissue Regeneration Center Salzburg (SCI-TReCS) at the Paracelsus Medical University.

Our research projects aim for the functional recovery following trauma or pathological conditions of the central nervous system, in particular the regeneration of motor and sensory functions following traumatic spinal cord injury. Although the central nervous system has been shown to possess regenerative capacities, these do not suffice to spontaneously bring significant functional recovery following lesion. Hence, we are investigating the potential of newly identified substances and therapy forms to stimulate the regenerative capacities of the central nervous system. Furthermore, the use of autologous adult stem and progenitor cells to support and promote regeneration is being intensively investigated.  These stem and progenitor cells will replace lost neurons and glia and will also modulate the lesion environment towards a pro-regenerative milieu.

Our main focuses are:

  • Adult stem cell therapies
  • Preclinical models of spinal cord injury
  • Stimulation of endogenous neurogenesis and gliogenesis
